Description
The 1881 (O) Morgan Dollar, struck at the New Orleans Mint, is part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 collection. With a mintage of 5.7 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 20% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1881-CC remained in Treasury vaults until released in GSA sales in the 1970s, surviving in remarkable condition. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 to 1909, producing coins valued for their Southern historical provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $87 to $1.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7128.
