Description
1881-O VAM-28 Doubled Profile Discovered by Jeff Oxman, December 1997. Revised 2015 28 (revised) III2 17 · C3a (Doubled Profile, Cap Top) (176) Obverse III2 17 – Liberty head profile is slightly doubled, from forehead to chin. Phrygian cap weakly doubled at top edges. Profile doubled. Die 1 - slightly doubled profile from forehead down to chin. Phrygian Cap weakly doubled at top edge. Die chip at top left of upper loop of both 8's. Die marker - Die scratch back of eye at hair edge. Die 2 - Die chip at top left inside of left 8 upper loop. This coin shares the exact same obverse as 1881-O VAM-28.2, 1881-O VAM-33 & 1881-O VAM-33B. Die marker- Diagonal die scratch below right rear of Phrygian Cap Die 3 - Tiny die chip at top left inside of left 8 upper loop. Die marker - Single diagonal polishing line at right side of R in LIBERTY. (Usually PL) Reverse C3a – Die 2 - Die marker - Diagonal polishing line on second inner feather from bottom of eagle's left wing. Die 3 - Die marker - Diagonal line and pitting wing-neck gap. Comments: 1881-O VAM-28.3 has the same obverse die as 1881-O VAM-16 and appears to be a slightly later die stage. As the 1881-O VAM-28.3 is usually found DMPL, it is reasonable to assume that the 1881-O VAM-16 is quite rare. 1881-O VAM-28.3 is much more common by comparison.
