Error
Description
Discovered by John Coxe in February 2007, the 1881-O Morgan Dollar VAM-1G is identified by heavy vertical die gouge lines in the eagle's right inner wing feathers — the "Die Gouges Inner Wing" feature that gives this variety its descriptive subtitle. The O mint mark is a Type II, positioned slightly left of center. The reverse shows minor pitting, and the variety comes clashed with no letter transfer visible from the clash. VAM-1G shares its obverse die with VAM-1B1 and VAM-1B2, linking these three varieties in the same obverse die emission sequence. The New Orleans Mint struck Morgan Dollars in 90% silver, and the 1881-O issue attracts collector interest within the broader O-mint Morgan Dollar series. The wing feather die gouges are the primary attribution marker that distinguishes VAM-1G within this obverse die group.
