1881-O VAM-8

Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, the 1881-O VAM-8 Morgan Dollar is designated "O Tilted Right" for its reverse mint mark characteristic. Classified as 8 III2 1 - C3f, the obverse die is a normal III2 type while the reverse C3f die displays a centered O mint mark tilted slightly to the right. This tilted mint mark variety reflects the hand-punched mint mark application process used at the New Orleans Mint, where slight angular variations in the punch orientation created collectible die varieties that modern attribution has systematically cataloged. The obverse die used for VAM-8 also appears in two other documented varieties: the same obverse is shared with VAM-35 and VAM-68, establishing an emission sequence that traces how the Mint paired and repaired obverse and reverse dies during the 1881-O production run. Morgan Dollars from the New Orleans Mint are actively collected, and VAM varieties with identifiable mint mark anomalies like the tilted O offer accessible entry points for collectors beginning to explore the depth of the Van Allen-Mallis cataloging system.
