1881-O VAM-1I

Description

Reported in 2011, the 1881-O VAM-1I Morgan dollar pairs the III2 1 obverse with a C3a reverse, designated Die Clash n and st. The obverse displays a clashed die impression with a partial incuse letter n from the reverse's IN visible next to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse st from the reverse's TRUST showing in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. These incuse clash marks were transferred when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Attribution requires careful distinction from similar varieties: this die marriage can be easily confused with 1881-O VAM-50A or 1881-O VAM-33A. Key differentiators include the mint mark position, which is centered, upright, and slightly high, ruling out VAM-33 where the mint mark sits differently. Additionally, the absence of a line in Liberty's eye distinguishes VAM-1I from VAM-50. The minor rim cuds on this variety appear in different locations than those on VAM-50A, providing yet another separation point. Collectors should examine all three diagnostics systematically when attributing clashed 1881-O Morgan dollars.
