Description

1881-O VAM-13 Doubled 8, O/O High Discovered by Louis Davis, November 1977. 13 III2 4 ∙ C3k (Doubled 8, O/O High) (176) Obverse III2 4 – First 8 slightly doubled at top inside of upper and lower loops and on surface at bottom outside of lower loop. Reverse C3k – Mint mark doubled strongly at top left and right outside. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: In later die stages, the "pincers" of the secondary O above the O mint mark close due to localized die stress joining them together. There is a crack from the D in UNITED to the S in STATES in this stage as well. Later die stages of the obverse have a die crack that goes from the S in PLURIBUS to the "pooch" in the cap. While 1881-O VAM-9 is also listed as having the III2 4 obverse, it is a different die. The obverse was later used on 1881-O VAM-47.
