1881-O VAM-26

Description

First documented by Leroy Van Allen in June 1984 and revised in 2011, 2014, and 2016, the 1881-O VAM-26 Morgan Dollar is classified 26(revised) III2 15 with a C3a reverse. The obverse displays doubled 18: the 1 is doubled slightly at the top right of the vertical shaft, and the left 8 shows doubling at the top outside, left inside, and right outside of the upper loop. A small patch of rusted die pitting at the hair curl in front of the ear indicates die surface deterioration from moisture exposure. Three short horizontal die scratches above the nose serve as the obverse die marker. On the reverse, the O mint mark is very slightly tilted left at normal height, and fine pitting in a diagonal line at the top of the eagle's wing-neck gap provides the reverse marker. The multiple revision dates spanning 1984 through 2016 reflect over three decades of refinement. Van Allen's personal discovery connects this variety to one of the co-creators of the VAM classification system. =1881-O VAM-26 Doubled 18= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, June 1984.
