Description
The 1948 (S) Jefferson Nickel, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 collection. With a mintage of 11.3 million, this is a less common issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 8% of total production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. All three mints produced nickels. Denver and San Francisco mintages were modest compared to Philadelphia. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
