1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-498 and DMR-008, this 1948 San Francisco Jefferson nickel carries RPM-006, a repunched mintmark showing as S/S with the secondary impression displaced to the south. The variety is also cross-referenced as MMS-002 with the label Trumpet Tail, referring to the distinctive flared appearance the overlapping mintmarks produce. Three die stages are documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state is likewise unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state reveals a die crack from the lower left E of UNITED to the rim, die scratches in the right small window of Monticello, and die scratches behind the queue of Jefferson's portrait. The trumpet tail effect created by the southward displacement gives this variety a memorable visual signature that distinguishes it from other RPMs in the 1948-S series. The late die state markers, particularly the die crack from UNITED and the window scratches, provide reliable secondary confirmation for collectors examining well-circulated examples where the mintmark repunching may be partially obscured.
