Description
Produced at the Denver Mint, the 1948 (D) Jefferson Nickel is part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 44.7 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 31% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. All three mints produced nickels. Denver and San Francisco mintages were modest compared to Philadelphia. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
