Description

The 1948-S Jefferson Nickel RPM-007 carries a dual attribution: it is both a repunched mintmark variety and a Trumpet Tail mintmark style coin, designated MMS-002. The Trumpet Tail S features a distinctively flared lower serif widening like the bell of a brass instrument — distinguishing it from standard styles used at the San Francisco Mint — the same puncheon designation found on the 1946-S RPM-003. Die markers are UVC-566 and DMR-009. The secondary mintmark displacement is oriented South, a southward ghost impression below the primary S. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B adds a specific marker: a small die gouge dot in the center of the C of CENTS — a precisely located reverse detail useful for concurrent attribution with the mintmark examination; the obverse is also mid-die state. Stage C shows both reverse and obverse in late die state. The Trumpet Tail designation adds collectible interest beyond standard RPM attribution, appealing to Jefferson Nickel mintmark style specialists alongside variety attributers. The 1948-S was struck in standard copper-nickel composition, the mintmark returned to its pre-war position at the right of Monticello.
