Description
Produced at the Carson City Mint, the 1878 (CC) Morgan Dollar is part of the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 2.2 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 5th of 11 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. First year of the Morgan Dollar. Eight tail feather and seven tail feather varieties exist from early die adjustments. Coined at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated for just 23 years (1870–1893) and produced coins now prized for their scarcity and Western provenance. S. numismatics.
