Description

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in December 1965, this Carson City Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-7 (revised) under classification II 8 with a B2d reverse, titled Doubled P, Wide CC, carrying a rarity rating of 177. The obverse shows hub doubling on the P in PLURIBUS, visible as an arc at the top right outside and at the bottom of the loop. A partially broken right star point provides a secondary diagnostic. The reverse carries a normal 1878-type B2 die with a short center arrow shaft and a widely spaced III-style CC mintmark at medium height. Since 1878 dates were part of the master die, no date position variation exists. The emission sequence links this obverse to the 1878-CC VAM-7A. Carson City Morgan dollars from 1878 represent the inaugural year of Morgan production at that facility, and die varieties from this date carry particular significance among VAM collectors. The doubled P requires magnification but remains accessible to cherrypickers.
