A Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar variety cataloged at DPIS 179, the 1878-CC VAM-21 is characterized by doubling on the obverse affecting the ear, cotton blossom leaves, date, and all stars — a broad spread of the Doubled Obverse that touches multiple design elements simultaneously. The reverse mintmark is medium-spaced and positioned at medium height, distinguishing it from VAM-6, which uses a different reverse. This variety is encountered in a late die state with die cracks present. Carson City Morgan Dollars carry significant premiums among collectors due to the mint's historic status and relatively lower production volumes compared to Philadelphia and San Francisco. VAM-21 has been reported as a possible duplicate of VAM-13, a classification question that remains part of the ongoing VAMWorld research discussion for the 1878-CC issue. The Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver. Late obverse die state with die cracks in date, stars, and letters.
