Error
Description
Bearing the coveted CC mintmark of the Carson City Mint — among the most collectible in American numismatics — this Morgan Dollar was discovered by Laurence Galbraith in September 2006. Designated 27 II 2 B2a (Medium CC, Two Die Gouges Wing), the obverse (II 2) shows a die chip on the front of the forehead, on top of the eyelid, and right of wheat leaves, matching 1878-CC VAM-2B. The reverse (B2a) features medium-spaced CC at normal height with two short horizontal die gouges in the middle of the eagle's left wing opposite the neck-wing junction. In 1878, dates were part of the master die so no position variation exists. The emission sequence places this obverse between VAM-14A and VAM-2B; the reverse follows VAM-13. Carson City Morgans carry premiums driven by Comstock Lode silver, the mint's short 1870-1893 operational period, and low production compared to Philadelphia and San Francisco.
