1878-CC VAM-25
ErrorDescription
Classified as II 7 with a B1h reverse, this 1878 Carson City Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-25 under the formal title Doubled 18-8, Doubled Reverse Legend. The obverse shows slight doubling on the digits 18-8, with the 1 doubled below the upper crossbar and both 8s doubled at the top inside of their upper loops. Die chips on the eyelid and front of the forehead match those seen on VAM-2, suggesting a shared or closely related obverse die. On the reverse, slight doubling appears at the base of the D in DOLLAR, the right star is doubled toward the rim, and the inside bottoms of the letters UNITED STATE-F AMERI exhibit doubling. The reverse carries medium Type II CC mintmarks with die chips present in both C letters. This variety has been flagged as a possible duplicate listing of VAM-2B, and personal examination of the discovery piece confirmed that it is indeed VAM-2B. Carson City Morgan dollars from the first year of production are avidly collected, and prospective buyers should be aware of the duplication question when evaluating coins attributed to VAM-25.
