Launching with the 1892 Columbian Exposition half dollar — the first U.S. commemorative coin — the classic series expanded over six decades into a rich catalog of half dollars, quarters, and dollars honoring states, events, and milestones. The 1930s brought peak proliferation: Boone, Oregon Trail, Texas, and Arkansas halves across multiple years and mints. Artistic highlights include James Earle Fraser's Oregon Trail Memorial and Gutzon Borglum's Stone Mountain design. Most were struck in .900 fine silver at 12.50 grams and 30.6 mm, matching standard half dollar specs. The series also includes the 1893 Isabella quarter (the only classic commemorative quarter) and the 1900 Lafayette dollar. Overproduction and abuse — coins increasingly benefiting local interests rather than national causes — prompted a Congressional moratorium after the 1954 Carver-Washington half dollar, creating a 28-year hiatus until 1982. Many had modest mintages, with substantial numbers returned unsold and melted, making net distribution the relevant survival measure.
