About This Coin
The 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Issued in 1926 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of American independence, this coin was sold at the Sesquicentennial International Exposition in Philadelphia. It is notable for being the only U.S. coin to depict a living president — Calvin Coolidge — at the time of issue. A companion gold quarter eagle was also produced. The obverse features conjoined busts of Presidents George Washington and Calvin Coolidge, representing the first and contemporary presidents, while the reverse displays the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American independence. Designed by John Frederick Lewis. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The unique distinction of featuring a sitting president alongside George Washington makes the Sesquicentennial Half Dollar a historically significant piece. With 141,120 in the final distribution, it remains moderately available.
