About This Coin
The 1921 Missouri Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Missouri's admission to the Union. The coin exists in two varieties: one with a small incuse '2 star 4' on the obverse (representing Missouri as the 24th state) and a plain version without this marking. Promoter Robert S. Emery personally handled distribution. The obverse features a frontiersman in coonskin cap and a Native American facing left, symbolizing the early settlers and indigenous peoples of Missouri, while the reverse displays a frontiersman and Native American standing together, with the inscription SEDALIA. Designed by Robert Aitken. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Both varieties of the Missouri Centennial Half Dollar are scarce with a combined mintage of about 40,000 pieces. The '2 star 4' variety commands a significant premium due to its lower mintage of approximately 5,000 coins.
