About This Coin

The 1935 California Pacific International Exposition Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Authorized to celebrate the California-Pacific International Exposition held in San Diego's Balboa Park in 1935 and 1936. The exposition showcased the achievements and culture of Pacific Rim nations. The coin was designed by Robert Aitken, who also created the Panama-Pacific commemorative $50 gold piece. The obverse features a seated female figure representing Minerva with a bear at her side, symbolizing California, with the observation tower of the California Building in the background, while the reverse displays a chapel within the grounds of the California-Pacific International Exposition in San Diego's Balboa Park. Designed by Robert Aitken. The first year of issue with 70,132 pieces struck at the San Francisco Mint. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The 1935 issue had a substantial mintage of 70,132, while the 1936 issue was limited to 30,092 pieces, making it considerably scarcer. The exposition setting in Balboa Park continues to serve as a cultural landmark in San Diego.
