About This Coin

The 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary Commemorative Half Dollar is a United States commemorative half dollar. Struck in 1935 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Connecticut colony in 1635. The Charter Oak on the obverse symbolizes Connecticut's fierce defense of its colonial charter — legend holds that when English Governor Sir Edmund Andros demanded the charter be surrendered, the candles in the meeting hall were extinguished and the charter was hidden in the hollow of the great oak tree. The obverse features the Charter Oak, the famous tree in Hartford where Connecticut's Royal Charter was reportedly hidden in 1687 to prevent its seizure by the English governor, while the reverse displays an eagle perched on a shield, surrounded by a wreath. Designed by Henry Kreis. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. With a mintage of 25,018, the Connecticut Tercentenary Half Dollar is a moderately scarce one-year issue. The Charter Oak design tells one of the most colorful stories in colonial American history.
