1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

On the 1964 Proof Roosevelt Dime, WDDO-008 displays doubling as a spread to the north on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials JS (John R. Sinnock), and slightly on the date. Attributed by the Wexler Team with variety ID 1964 10¢ Pr WDDO-008, the obverse carries a diagnostic blunt tail on the 9 of the date, while the reverse shows a small die gouge to the left of the T in UNITED. The 1964 date marks the final year of 90% silver Roosevelt Dimes before the composition switch to copper-nickel clad in 1965, and proof varieties from this transitional year hold added significance for collectors documenting the end of the silver proof era. The northward spread direction indicates the hub shifted upward relative to the die during impression, displacing design elements in that direction. Proof strikes on silver planchets tend to show doubling with exceptional clarity due to the reflective fields.
