1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1964 10c Pr WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-V and Cherrypickers' Guide FS-10-1964-101 (018.4), this proof 1964 Roosevelt Silver Dime shows a strong Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately the 2 o'clock position, affecting IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials JS, and the first three letters LIB of LIBERTY. Class V doubled dies result from a pivoted hub impression that creates rotational spread increasing with distance from the pivot, and with the pivot at 2 o'clock, the design elements farthest from that point — particularly IGWT near the bottom — show the greatest displacement. The obverse features a blunt tail 9 in the date, along with a die scratch running north-northwest to south-southeast on the back of Roosevelt's neck. No significant reverse markers were noted. The 1964 proof Roosevelt Dime was the final year of silver proof dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver coinage for circulation, and these proof specimens were struck at Philadelphia in quantities of approximately 3.95 million sets. The dual cross-referencing in both the CONECA catalog and the Cherrypickers' Guide as a Fivaz-Stanton listed variety indicates this is a well-recognized and actively collected doubled die, carrying collector premiums reflected in its inclusion in major variety references.
