1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Carrying the distinction of being the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the final 90% silver Proof Roosevelt Dime, this 1964 WDDO-001 exhibits a Class V counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 11 o'clock position. The rotational doubling affects the date, the designer's initials (JS for John R. Sinnock), IN GOD WE TRUST, and the hair lines on the lower back of the head — an extensive distribution indicating a significant rotational offset during hubbing. The Wexler Team cataloged this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1964 10¢ Pr WDDO-001. Obverse die markers include a blunt tail on the 9 in the date and a small die gouge below the left side of the numeral 1, both useful for confirming attribution when the doubling itself is subtle in certain die states. The reverse carries no significant die markers. As a 1964 Proof, this dime was struck on silver planchets at the Philadelphia Mint during what would become the last year of silver dime production. The Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned dimes to copper-nickel clad, making WDDO-001 part of the final generation of Proof silver Roosevelt Dime doubled dies.
