About This Coin
The 1964 Roosevelt Dime is a United States dime from the Roosevelt Silver Dimes 1946-1964 series — the final year of the series. In 1964, coins were struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints with a combined mintage of 2.3 billion. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 243.5 million. The obverse features Franklin D. Roosevelt facing left, honoring the president who championed the March of Dimes and the reverse displays a torch flanked by olive and oak branches, symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. The final year of 90% silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 changed the composition to clad. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 2.5 grams, 17.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Collectors have cataloged 135 known die varieties for this date across 6 categories, including cud, die chip, doubled die obverse and 3 other types. Produced 9 years after the celebrated 1955 key date. Across its variants, estimated values range from $7 to $198 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $10K in SP66 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by John R. Sinnock.
