Description
A doubled die obverse is visible on this 1866 Indian Head cent. A doubled die occurs when a working die receives a second, misaligned impression from the hub during the die-making process, creating doubled design elements on all coins struck from that die. In this case, doubling can be seen in Liberty with lots of mechanical doubling on the lettering. This variety is cataloged as FS-101 and Snow-1. The 1866 Indian Head cent had a mintage of just under 10 million pieces, making it a lower-mintage post-war issue.
