Description
A doubled die obverse is visible on this 1857 Proof Flying Eagle cent. A doubled die occurs when a working die receives a second, misaligned impression from the hub, creating doubled design elements on coins struck from that die. In this case, doubling can be seen on the eagle's beak and outer wing as well as in “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” with the doubling getting weaker from left to right. This variety is cataloged as FS-401 and Snow-5. The 1857 Proof Flying Eagle cent is a key issue in the series, with proof mintages estimated at only 100-150 pieces.
