Description

Part of the Peace Dollars 1921-1935 series, the 1928 (S) Peace Dollar is a dollar from the San Francisco Mint. With a mintage of 1.6 million, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 82% of production. The obverse features a youthful Liberty facing left wearing a radiate crown, designed after sculptor Anthony de Francisci's wife Teresa and the reverse displays a bald eagle perched on a rock above the word PEACE, with rays of sunlight. Struck only at Philadelphia with a mintage of 360,649 — the lowest regular-issue mintage in the series and a key date. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues. Estimated market value ranges from $87 to $15K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
