Description
Recognized as a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM, VAM-3A of the 1928-S Peace dollar was discovered by Dennis Fischer in April 2001. Designated II 2 B2b as Doubled Motto Strong Lower Right, Medium High S, Die File Lines, this variety carries a rarity rating of I-4 R-5. The obverse type II 2 shows doubled motto elements concentrated in the lower-right portion of the design, and later die states reveal die file lines around TR and R in LIBERTY as well as in the left field, indicating progressive die reworking during the production run. The medium high S mintmark placement helps distinguish this variety from other 1928-S die marriages. The Top 50 designation places VAM-3A among the most significant and sought-after Peace dollar varieties in the entire series, as judged by rarity, visual appeal, and collector demand. The 1928-S had a modest mintage, and the R-5 rating estimates a surviving population of 30 to 75 pieces. The reverse motto reads IN GOD WE TRVST, following the classical Latin convention used throughout the Peace dollar series.
