Description

Three fine vertical gouge lines below D in GOD extending down to the numeral 1, plus a shallow broad vertical gouge above the top of 1, define VAM-1F1 of the 1925 Peace Dollar. Discovered by Eric Justice in December 2004, this variety presents a cluster of die gouges concentrated in the GOD-date area, creating multiple diagnostic points visible under magnification. The vertical orientation of all four gouges suggests they may have resulted from a single incident of die damage, perhaps contact with a tool during handling. Cataloged as plate 1F1 II 1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity estimating 1 to 5 known specimens, this variety is genuinely scarce. The 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had a large mintage exceeding 10 million, making the base date readily available while the specific variety remains elusive. Die gouges near the date and motto provide convenient attribution reference points.
