Description

Selective doubling on the obverse of this 1928-S Peace Dollar provides a diagnostic puzzle: WE TRV of the motto, the designer's initials, and the back of Liberty's neck all show doubling on the right side, yet the date, nose, lips, and rays exhibit no doubling whatsoever. This selective pattern helps classify the doubling mechanism, as different hub displacement types affect different zones depending on the angle and direction of misalignment. Discovered in March 2006 by George Powell, VAM-6 carries plate notation 6 II 4 B2a with importance I-2 (moderately important) and rarity R-5 (scarce). The obverse die designation II 4 indicates this is the fourth obverse die with doubling documented for 1928-S. The 1928-S is one of the better dates in the Peace Dollar series, with a lower mintage that makes die varieties from this date-mint combination more challenging to locate.
