Classic Gold Commemoratives (1903-1926)
Coin Series
About This Series
Spanning the early 20th century, classic gold commemoratives were produced in $1 and $2.50 denominations for expositions and historical anniversaries. The series opened with the 1903 Louisiana Purchase gold dollars in Jefferson and McKinley varieties — the first gold commemoratives in American history. Subsequent issues included the 1904-1905 Lewis and Clark dollars, the spectacular 1915 Panama-Pacific set with its legendary $50 round and octagonal pieces (approximately 83.6 grams in .900 fine gold, the largest American gold coins since the territorial era), and the 1926 Sesquicentennial quarter eagles. One-dollar commemoratives measured 15 mm at 1.672 grams, while quarter eagles were 18 mm at 4.18 grams, all in .900 fine gold. Many had modest original mintages with substantial numbers returned unsold and melted, making net distribution the relevant survival measure. The $50 Panama-Pacific pieces remain among the most valuable U.S. commemoratives, while more modest issues offer accessible entry points to gold commemorative collecting.
