About This Coin

The 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Commemorative Gold Dollar - Jefferson is a United States commemorative dollar. Issued in 1903 alongside the McKinley variety for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. Jefferson is depicted because he authorized the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million — approximately 4 cents per acre — in what is considered the greatest land deal in history. The obverse features a bust of President Thomas Jefferson facing left, who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, while the reverse displays the denomination ONE DOLLAR surrounded by a wreath, with LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION. Designed by Charles E. Barber. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Jefferson variety had a mintage of 17,500, identical to the McKinley version. Together they represent the birth of U.S. commemorative gold coinage and are highly sought after by both gold coin and commemorative specialists.
