About This Coin

The 1904 Lewis and Clark Exposition Commemorative Gold Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized for the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oregon, commemorating the famous 1804-1806 expedition that explored the American West from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. Gold dollars were struck in both 1904 and 1905, with the 1905 issue being considerably scarcer. The obverse features a bust of Meriwether Lewis facing left, while the reverse displays a bust of William Clark facing left. Designed by Charles E. Barber. The first year of issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a net distribution of 10,025 pieces. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Both dates are scarce, with the 1904 having a net mintage of 10,025 and the 1905 just 10,041. The unique dual-portrait format — with Lewis on one side and Clark on the other — makes this the only U.S. coin featuring two different explorers.
