Issued in 1903 for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, this gold dollar was one of two varieties produced — the other featuring Thomas Jefferson. The exposition commemorated the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. These were the first U.S. commemorative gold coins. The obverse features a bust of President William McKinley facing left, while the reverse displays the denomination ONE DOLLAR surrounded by a wreath, with LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION. Designed by Charles E. Barber. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. As one of the first two commemorative gold coins issued by the United States, the McKinley Louisiana Purchase gold dollar holds foundational importance. With a mintage of 17,500, it is a scarce and desirable classic gold commemorative.
