Description

The 1904 Lewis and Clark Exposition Commemorative Gold Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 10,025, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Authorized for the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oregon, commemorating the famous 1804-1806 expedition that explored the American West from St. The obverse features a bust of Meriwether Lewis facing left, while the reverse displays a bust of William Clark facing left. Designed by Charles E. Barber. The first year of issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a net distribution of 10,025 pieces. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7447. Both dates are scarce, with the 1904 having a net mintage of 10,025 and the 1905 just 10,041. The unique dual-portrait format — with Lewis on one side and Clark on the other — makes this the only U.S. coin featuring two different explorers.
