About This Coin

The 1922 Grant Memorial Commemorative Gold Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Issued in 1922 as a companion piece to the Grant Memorial half dollar, commemorating the centennial of Grant's birth. Like the half dollar, two varieties were produced: one with a small incuse star on the obverse and one without. The gold dollar had extremely low mintages for both varieties. The obverse features a bust of Ulysses S. Grant facing right in military uniform, similar to the companion half dollar, while the reverse displays Grant's birthplace log cabin in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Grant gold dollar is one of the rarest classic commemorative gold coins, with the star variety having a net distribution of just 5,016 pieces and the no-star variety only 5,000. These low mintages make both versions highly coveted by commemorative gold specialists.
