Description

Bearing the prestigious "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation from the Wexler Team, this 2024 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel showcases Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the obverse. The doubling is most prominent on IN GOD WE TRUST, where it decreases in spread from left to right across the motto, a characteristic signature of tilted hub doubling where one side of the hub was angled slightly during the hubbing process. Closer, more subtle doubling also appears on the Y of LIBERTY. The obverse die markers include a die gouge at the lower right of N in IN and die clash marks across Jefferson's eyes, while the reverse carries a die gouge on the upper portion of the right arch, die clash marks below and left of the center steps, and a die gouge to the left of U in UNITED. Very nice Class VIII doubling of this caliber is uncommon on modern Jefferson Nickels, which helps explain the "Best Of" recognition. The variety is cataloged as Wexler 2024-P WDDO-003. Jefferson Nickels have been struck in a 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy since the series began in 1938, with the exception of the wartime silver alloy used from 1942 to 1945.
