Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible on Jefferson's left and right eyes characterizes this second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2024 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel — one of the most recent die varieties documented in the Return to Monticello series. The eye area is diagnostically significant because the curved contours of the orbital region amplify even subtle hub tilt into visible doubled profiles, making this a variety that can be detected at moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the I of IN, multiple die gouges below RU of TRUST, and a die gouge inside the upper loop of the first 2 in the date. The reverse carries its own diagnostic markers: a die gouge above the M of UNUM and two die gouges at the rim between the S of PLURIBUS and the first U of UNUM. This comprehensive set of die markers across both sides provides exceptionally reliable attribution. The 2024 Jefferson Nickel continues the composition and design introduced under the Return to Monticello program in 2006, and as a very recent issue, population data is still accumulating as collectors and variety specialists examine newly released coins.
