Description

Sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY and a wide right side on the 2 of the date distinguish this thirteenth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2018 1-cent WDDO-013. Die markers provide critical secondary attribution points: on the obverse, a die chip appears to the left of the lower 2 of the date and a small die chip sits within the lower R of TRUST; on the reverse, a die chip can be found within the O of OF. These die chips formed as small fragments separated from the die surface, leaving cavities that filled with metal during striking. The sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY — rather than a clean directional spread — suggests the hubbing misalignment involved a tilting component, possibly consistent with Class VIII (tilted hub) doubling. The 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent continues the reverse design introduced in 2010, featuring a union shield that replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse used from 1959 through 2008. Thirteen documented doubled die obverses for a single date reflects the intensity of modern die variety research, where dedicated searchers examine rolls and bags systematically to identify new varieties shortly after coins enter circulation.
