Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins as PC-1c-2018-01, this pre-cud represents the earliest stage of a developing rim break on a 2018-P Lincoln Shield Cent die. Pre-cuds capture the moment when a die crack has propagated to or near the rim but the weakened section has not yet fractured away — the die is failing but still structurally intact enough to continue striking. The raised line visible on the coin traces the fracture path through the die steel, formed as planchet metal is forced into the growing fissure under coining pressure. Each pre-cud documents a die approaching terminal failure, a valuable snapshot in the progressive sequence from hairline cracks through pre-cuds to retained cuds and finally full cuds where the fragment separates entirely. The 2018-P Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at Philadelphia in copper-plated zinc, the standard composition since 1982.
