Description

Despite continuous improvements in die manufacturing technology at the United States Mint, hub doubling events persist in modern production, and this 2018 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent WDDR-006 demonstrates that reality. The sixth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2018 date preserves evidence of hub misalignment during die preparation, where the design was not perfectly registered between successive hub impressions needed to fully sink the shield motif into the working die. Modern single-squeeze hubbing, introduced to reduce doubling, has lowered the frequency of such events but has not eliminated them entirely. Cross-referenced as 2018 1¢ WDDR-006 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The Lincoln Shield Cent's intricate reverse, with its Union shield bearing vertical stripes, a horizontal scroll reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, contains enough fine detail that even slight misregistration creates identifiable doubling. Each new WDDR cataloged for a given year adds to the documentary record of production variability at the Philadelphia Mint.
