Visible on the reverse of this 1859 Indian Head cent, a pre-cud die crack runs from approximately 8 o'clock through the wreath to 10 o'clock on the opposite rim — a substantial fracture that has not yet progressed to a full cud where the die fragment would separate entirely and leave a featureless raised blob on struck coins. Pre-cuds represent an intermediate stage in die failure, where the crack has developed sufficiently to be clearly visible on struck specimens but the fractured segment of the die still remains in position, retaining partial design detail within the affected zone while showing the crack lines that foreshadow eventual complete separation. The 1859 date holds special significance as the first year of the Indian Head cent series, designed by James Barton Longacre. Uniquely, the 1859 issue features the Laurel Wreath reverse design used only in this inaugural year before being replaced by the Oak Wreath with Shield reverse beginning in 1860 — making any die variety on the 1859 reverse inherently distinctive because it appears on a one-year-only design. The Indian Head cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 88% copper and 12% nickel (the "white cent" composition used from 1857 through 1864 before transitioning to bronze), weighing approximately 4.67 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm.
