1863 Indian Head Cent Pre-Cud Reverse (9 to 11 o'clock)

Description

A pre-cud die crack is visible on the reverse of this 1863 Indian Head cent. A pre-cud is a significant die crack that has not yet progressed to a full cud at the rim. In this case, the crack starts around 9 o'clock and runs through the wreath up to approximately 11 o'clock at the rim. The 1863 Indian Head cent was the last copper-nickel issue before the mid-1864 transition to bronze. Civil War-era hoarding meant dies were run far beyond normal use, producing an unusually high number of die breaks and deterioration errors.
