2018 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

Sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY with no doubling observed on the date characterizes this 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse. The selective nature of the doubling, affecting LIBERTY while leaving the date undisturbed, indicates the hub displacement occurred in a direction and at a magnitude that impacted the left-center field of the obverse die more than the lower-right area where the date resides. Lyndall Bass's adaptation of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait continues the century-old obverse tradition with sufficient detail to register hub anomalies. Obverse die markers: a die scratch extending from the left side of the W of WE. Reverse markers are more abundant: a die scratch through the U of UNITED, a die scratch between the A and M of AMERICA, and three die scratches at the center of the M of AMERICA. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 2018 1¢ WDDO-012, with no other known attributions. Twelve documented DDOs for the 2018 Shield Cent reflects the ongoing varietal productivity of modern cent dies. Attributed by the Wexler Team.
