Description

Exhibiting moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY, this Wexler Team attribution documents the 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent WDDO-009 — a modern doubled die on Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait with the Union Shield reverse designed by Lyndall Bass and sculpted by Joseph Menna. The moderate intensity positions this variety between subtle close spreads and readily visible strong spreads, requiring magnification but offering identifiable broadening of LIBERTY's letterforms once located. No significant obverse die markers are present, while the reverse carries a small die chip on the top left of the shield north of the R in PLURIBUS — a useful confirmation point after identifying the obverse doubling. This Wexler cross-reference is "2018 1-cent WDDO-009," with no known cross-references to other attribution systems. This Philadelphia Mint regular strike was produced in copper-plated zinc — the modern cent composition adopted in 1982. The Lincoln Shield Cent series, introduced in 2010, replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse. Examine LIBERTY under moderate magnification for the extra thickness, then flip the coin to locate the die chip above the shield near R in PLURIBUS to verify the working die identification.
