Description

Extra thickness on LIBERTY without corresponding doubling on the date distinguishes this eighth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2018 Lincoln Shield Cent. The Wexler Team notes that this die was initially described as having doubling on the date, but further examination confirmed no doubling is present there — a correction that underscores the importance of rigorous verification in die variety attribution. Die markers include a die chip above the E of LIBERTY and a die crack extending from the rim between the W and E of WE into the top of Lincoln's hair on the obverse. The reverse carries a die chip below the F of OF and a die chip on the lower N of UNUM. The obverse die crack from the rim into Lincoln's hair is diagnostically valuable as a secondary marker that evolves independently of the doubling itself. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2018 1¢ WDDO-008, this variety belongs to the Lincoln Shield Cent series introduced in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse. The selective nature of the doubling — affecting LIBERTY but not the date — indicates the hub displacement was localized to a specific zone of the die face, consistent with a slight pivot or tilt during one of the multiple impressions required for complete design transfer.
