2007 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Fourth in the Wexler doubled die obverse sequence for the 2007-P Utah State Quarter (catalog designation 2007-P 25¢ UT WDDO-004), this variety carries hub doubling on the obverse design elements of John Flanagan's Washington portrait that was used across all fifty State Quarter issues from 1999 through 2008. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler system have been published. Utah was the forty-fifth state admitted to the Union (January 4, 1896) and the forty-fifth State Quarter released, carrying a reverse design by Joseph Menna depicting the "Golden Spike" ceremony at Promontory Summit, where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met on May 10, 1869, to complete the first transcontinental railroad. While WDDO-004 affects the obverse rather than Utah's distinctive reverse, the obverse design elements — LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and Washington's portrait details — provide established checkpoints where hub displacement manifests as spread, extra thickness, or doubled contours. As the fourth cataloged obverse doubled die for this date-mint, WDDO-004 indicates that the die population employed for 2007-P Utah quarter production generated at least four working dies with detectable obverse hub misalignment. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the Philadelphia Mint (5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge), the 2007-P Utah quarter circulated widely. Examination under 7x to 10x magnification on the obverse inscription and portrait elements, compared against published Wexler reference imagery for WDDO-004, provides the definitive attribution pathway.
