2007 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2007-P 25¢ UT WDDO-002, this 2007 Utah State Quarter exhibits doubling visible on the underside of Washington’s earlobe on the obverse — a localized but diagnostically significant hub displacement feature positioned on one of the portrait’s fine anatomical details. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the centers of the R in QUARTER and the D in DOLLAR, die chips above JF and above the C in WC (the designer’s initials), and a die crack running across the base of the bust extending west into the field. Reverse markers include a short die gouge running west from the lower left second zero in 2007, a small die gouge to the left of the lower 7, and a die scratch running ESE from the upper right 7. The die crack across the bust base extending into the field documents progressive structural failure in a high-stress transition zone where the raised portrait meets the flat field area. No additional cross-references are currently known. The 2007 Utah State Quarter is part of the 50 State Quarters Program (1999–2008), with the Utah reverse depicting the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit in 1869. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, balance copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, the obverse features John Flanagan’s Washington portrait. The earlobe doubling location is particularly effective for cherrypicking because the anatomical detail’s position on the portrait allows quick visual screening even under moderate magnification, while the bust die crack provides an independent confirmation marker visible at even lower power.
