Description

First and primary doubled die obverse catalogued for the 2007-P Utah State Quarter, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2007-P 25c UT WDDO-001. The doubling manifests on the underside of Washington's earlobe — a consistent location for hub-induced doubling where ear relief concentrates misalignment. Die markers are particularly elaborate on this die. The obverse carries a large die chip in the lower B of LIBERTY, a small die chip in the lower R of LIBERTY, heavy die cracks along the base of the bust through the designer's initials extending west into the field, die chips to the right of the upper F in JF and below the WC monogram, die cracks and chips at the bottom of the queue, and a die chip joining the tops of T and R in TRUST. The reverse is free of noted markers. The density of obverse die markers reflects a working die that experienced significant stress, giving collectors multiple independent confirmation points. The State Quarter series produced numerous die varieties from the complex reverse designs, and this DDO is among the more fully documented. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID 2007-P 25c UT WDDO-001.
